Choose a transparent history, not just a puppy photograph

A responsible choice starts with the dam, rearing environment, records, health, and a breeder willing to support the owner after handover.

Before visitingResearch

Review parents, provenance, environment, and purpose of the mating.

At the meetingObserve

Focus on behaviour, the dam, and the environment rather than colour.

After handoverSupport

Agreement, contacts, routine, and veterinary plan are clear.

01

Questions for the breeder

Ask why the pair was chosen, what strengths and risks are known in the lines, how parentage is supported, which assessments were completed, how puppies were raised and socialised, and what happens if the owner cannot keep the dog.

02

Red flags

Pressure to decide quickly, refusal to show the dam or environment, unverifiable parentage, guaranteed health or championships, multiple litters without a clear system, and unwillingness to discuss return arrangements are reasons to stop.

03

The first 90 days

Keep the familiar diet and routine initially, schedule a veterinary check, create a safe resting place, introduce the environment and equipment gradually, begin gentle training, and retain breeder and clinic contacts.

  • Agreement and party identification
  • Pedigree or parentage record
  • Veterinary record and treatment dates
  • Feeding, sleep, and activity routine
  • Contacts and return or support policy
